Newtown

Newtown, located near the Johannesburg city centre, originally started out as a racially mixed working class district where bricks were manufactured. In the late 1890s, the brickworks was removed to make way for the Kazerne Marshalling Yard, the first railway marshalling yard of its kind in Johannesburg.

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Newtown Precinct was named "the Brickfields". By 1896, approximately 7,000 people lived in the town.Brickfields', Ed Charlton states, attracted a number of industries, such as trade firms, banks, brick factories, a brewery, and fisheries, as well as immigrants from other nations.

On this second stop you will learn more of the history of this fascinating part of the city.
Maboneng & Marshalltown
We begin at Marshalltown to learn about the history of this area that was once a strip of land on the farm Turffontein, then we head to Maboneng.
Maboneneg is a Sotho word meaning "place of light", a fitting name for a district that has become a centre of creative energy for Johannesburg's urban artists.

Learn about the epic street art initiative and visit its cultural attractions like the Museum of African Design, Arts on Main—a complex that was previously a series of dilapidated buildings and now has many cool galleries, restaurants and boutiques.

Feel free to stop for a coffee at one of the many quirky cafes in the precinct.

Constitutional Hill & Braamfontein
There is no other site of incarceration in South Africa that imprisoned the sheer number of world-renowned men and women as those held within the walls of Constitution Hill’s prison cells. The site is a former prison and military fort that bears testament to South Africa’s turbulent past and today, is home to the country’s Constitutional court which endorses the rights of all citizens.
Constitution Hill is a living museum that tells the story of South Africa's journey to democracy. This will be an impactful beginning to the tour.
