Newtown
Newtown, located near the Johannesburg city centre, originally started out as a racially mixed working class district where bricks were manufactured. In the late 1890s, the brickworks was removed to make way for the Kazerne Marshalling Yard, the first railway marshalling yard of its kind in Johannesburg.
​
At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Newtown Precinct was named "the Brickfields". By 1896, approximately 7,000 people lived in the town.Brickfields' from Ed Charlton's opinion attracted a number of industries, such as trade firms, banks, brick factories, a brewery, and fisheries, as well as immigrants from other nations.

In April 1904, Mahatma Gandhi declared an outbreak of the bubonic plague in Brickfield. The plague caused 82 fatalities and 112 people were reportedly diagnosed with it.The local government initiated the fire brigade to start fires within the town aiming to cease the plague

Constitutional Hill & Braamfontein
There is perhaps no other site of incarceration in South Africa that imprisoned the sheer number of world-renowned men and women as those held within the walls of Constitution Hill’s prison cells. The site is a former prison and military fort that bears testament to South Africa’s turbulent past and, today, is home to the country’s Constitutional court which endorses the rights of all citizens.
